Listeria is a Bacterium

Last month, experts confirmed nine cases of Listeria in the state of Colorado. First indications are that outbreaks of infected melons, but a relative of an infected person claims that he was eating salmon. Officials are still gathering information as a cause, but now, melon seems the culprit. With a long gestation, according to one source, it makes it very difficult to detect Listeria.

With that said, what is listeria and how we improve our chances are not infected by it? According to one expert, there are several steps you can take to reduce your risk of infection.

“Listeria is a bacterium that causes listeriosis, a disease that usually causes flu-like symptoms, myalgia, fever, etc.,” said Dr. Kara Rogers Editor, Biomedical Sciences. “It can also affect the heart and produces symptoms of meningitis, including headache, confusion, and stiff neck.”

There are many homes that fall prey to the type of bacteria called Listeria monocytogenes, which causes the disease called listeriosis. These micro-organisms can not be very familiar sound to us, but we believe it is immune. In fact, we the type of bacteria and we will not know. That’s because it only affects people who are immunocompromised, or those whose immune systems are not the best in themselves or in vulnerable circumstances. Examples of immunocompromised individuals are pregnant women, cancer patients, babies and basically anyone who fights against a certain form of serious illness. This does not, but because we are good, we can worry about the possibility of contracting listeriosis. We should all be careful, because we never know when we are perhaps most at risk.

Listeriosis is a disease we can get by eating meat and dairy products such as hot dogs, cheese and raw meat. Fortunately, the bacteria are slain by heating. This means you should never eat these foods, unless you can warm them. And they have to steaming before you can use them in your mouth. It is also wise to not eat unpasteurized milk or foods made from it. Processed foods containing meat can carry bacteria. Instead of eating soft cheeses, you can go to the hardware that is safer.
